Kim Elliott
Hip Hop
Biography:
Kim Elliott, dance educator, choreographer and performer, obtained her MA in Dance Education from NYU, Steinhardt, where she received the Outstanding in Dance Education award. She received her BS from Fashion Institute of Technology in Marketing and Communications and has been choreographing and producing her own dance productions since 2001. A NYC native, Kim’s first love has always been hip hop dance. Although her training extends to other dance forms, she always challenges herself to bridge the gap between the streets and the stage of hip hop dance culture. Currently Kim is the dance director at The Beacon School in Manhattan, an Adjunct Professor at NYU where she teaches Hip Hop Dance Technique and Pedagogy and a Hip Hop teacher at Peridance for the Perichild program. Kim has performed, choreographed and taught at various NYC venues including Aaron Davis Hall, Peridance, Beacon Theatre, Producers' Club and Radio City Music Hall for NYU Steinhardt’s graduation ceremony. Furthermore, she has extended her knowledge abroad in Uganda, where she taught master hip hop classes and choreographed for the Queen of Uganda. Kim is most proud of her growth as a dance educator and choreographer and working with different students on all levels in all styles of hip hop dance culture.
Class Description:
Kim's class will take you on a historical and cultural journey of Hip Hop dance from the beginning with a stretch and conditioning warm-up to the end with a community freestyle circle. By teaching the fundamentals of different Hip Hop styles, Kim helps her students understand the foundations of Hip Hop dance and the importance of musicality while also encouraging them to build confidence in learning Hip Hop choreography. Using music from the past four decades, you never know what song you'll be grooving to or what style you'll be enlightened with. From Popping and Locking to Whacking, Voguing, House and everything in between, you will develop stamina, self confidence, knowledge and mostly how to be expressive and have fun!
