Sun Kim Dance TheatreSun Kim Dance Theatre (SKDT) is a dance company rooted deeply in Popping and storytelling with different aspects of visual arts. SKDT aspires to create platforms for underrepresented artists. We aim to make everyone's voices heard through evolving content that speaks directly of universal human experiences, using Popping with storytelling. Our hope is that by featuring a wide range of perspectives, we can help to build a more inclusive and equitable world. By providing a space for underrepresented artists to share their stories, we can help to break down barriers and create understanding. We believe that everyone's story deserves to be heard, and we are committed to making that happen. LEARN MORE |
About Director Sun Kim:
Sun Kim was born and raised in South Korea and started dancing with Breaking at the age of 12. A few years later, she fell in love with Popping, the style in which she finds strength and freedom to speak her truth. To pursue her dreams, she moved to New York City in 2011, and since then, she has achieved many accomplishments, such as winning Step Ya Game Up world final Popping battle, making it to the top 8 at UK B-Boy championship world final as the USA Popping representative, and performing for 45Degrees/Cirque Du Soleil. Rather than staying in her comfort zone, she continues to challenge herself in different industries such as commercial jobs for Madonna, Elton John, Phish, Nike, McDonald’s, Golden Goose, and Gap, and also in the theater industry, she presented her own work for Burning Man at Sotheby's, Harlem Stage, Breakin’ Convention as well as performing with Mozaik Dance that she co-founded. Mozaik Dance focuses on storytelling and experimental Popping. They performed at Jacob’s Pillow, New Victory Theater, San Francisco International Hip Hop Dance Festival, and Mark Morris.
She is also a dance educator and has taught Popping at Princeton University, Peridance Center, Broadway Dance Center, and EXPG NY and a producer and director of WHO YOU ARE in New York and South Korea.
