At what age should a child begin dance?
We offer classes for children as young as 18 months, through our Young Movers Program! Our youngest students begin with exploration of basic motor skills accompanied by music and props. Toddlers move on to creative movement, with a gradual introduction to basic ballet and/or tap steps. Though we believe children can reap the benefits of dance starting at 18 months, your child is never too old to start!
What age range do the children's classes serve?
The School at Peridance serves students ages 18 months (accompanied by an adult to 18 years. Our Young Movers Program caters to children 18 months to 5-years old; the PeriChild Program is for students ages 6 to 12 years; the PeriTeen Program is for students ages 13 to 17 years through high school graduation. There is also a ballet-focused Core Training Program for 7.5- to 14-year olds, and the Peridance Youth Ensemble for 15- to 17-year olds who wish to acquire skills that will help them achieve a career in dance. Mature teens who want to take drop-in classes might also consider our Adult Open Classes, offered in a wide variety of styles and levels.
What kinds of classes do you offer?
The School at Peridance offers classes including ballet, jazz, tap, modern, hip hop, choreography, creative movement, toddler dancing, and parents & toddlers. You can find our class schedule online.
How many students are usually in each class?
We at Peridance understand the importance of personal attention as it pertains to every age group. Parent-and-toddler classes and classes for children ages 2.5 to 5 years generally have 10 students or less. We try to cap classes at 12-15 students, and once we get past 10 in a class there are two teachers assigned to that class. The older students generally have about 10 students per class as well.
Is there an advanced/accelerated program for serious students?
The School at Peridance offers an accelerated ballet-focused program for students 7- to 14-years old called the Pre-Professional Training Program. Admission is by audition, and is subject to teacher approval based on technical proficiency. Peridance is also home to the Peridance Youth Ensemble, a non-profit outreach youth dance company founded in 2000. The Ensemble helps prepare its members for professional company work. Members of the Ensemble are chosen by audition.
Are there children's performance opportunities?
Yes! Every Spring, there are three performances for our various aged students, "Creative Concert" for our younger students (ages 4-5 yrs), "Spring Concert" (ages 6-8 yrs) and an "Annual Concert" for students in levels II and up (8-18 yrs).
Are children required to perform if they are enrolled in the School at Peridance?
No. While all children are given the opportunity to perform, students are not required to participate in the performance.
Why is there a costume fee?
There is a costume fee in the Spring, separate from the cost of the course, to pay for your child's performance costume. If you want your child to perform in the Creative or Annual Concert, then you must purchase a costume. Please note that the costume is also different from the dress code (see below), which each student is responsible for purchasing on his or her own.
What is the dress code?
The School at Peridance has a mandatory dress code for all classes except our youngest: Parent & Toddlers, Toddler Dancing, and Creative Movement. Skirts, jewelry, jeans, and baggy clothes are NOT allowed. Long hair must be pulled back neatly into a ponytail, braid, or bun so that hair does not become a distraction. Please see our Policies and Guidelines webpage for detailed information.
Creative Ballet through Teen Ballet: pink ballet tights with pink ballet slippers and an assigned color leotard (school designated) for girls. Black men's tights or shorts with black ballet slippers for boys.
Modern, Tap, and Jazz: black leotards and leggings/tights with black tap or jazz shoes, or barefoot for Modern.
Hip Hop: sneakers with comfortable clothing.
How much do classes cost?
For one semester, class costs begin as low as $468 for Parents and Toddlers, and $522. Prices increase as number of weekly classes increases. We offer an early registration discount! Additionally, if your child takes multiple classes, you can receive a discount on each additional class. You can register for classes online.
Is there a reduced cost for siblings?
Yes! We offer a 5% discount for siblings.
Do you offer trial classes?
Yes! We offer trials for $30 per class. The $30 will be applied to your tuition if you decide to register. Your child is allowed to take multiple trial classes, all of which fees will be applied to future tuition. Please contact coordinator Shelley Grantham to schedule a trial class at 212-505-0886 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
What happens if my child misses a class?
Should your child have to miss a class, he or she may do a "makeup" in any class we offer that is age and level appropriate. Please notify your child's instructor about any known absences.
