    Waacking

    Biography:

Tyrone Bevans (NYX) is a native NYC dancer, choreographer and visual artist. He began his journey in dance while studying at the Mark Morris Dance Group and Martha Graham School for Contemporary Dance. He weaves together Contemporary, Jazz, House, and Waacking to create his unique approach. A student of the legendary Tyrone Proctor and Princess Lockeroo, he champions the expressive 1970’s disco era dance style of Waacking. He believes this style can be a tool for self- actualization and true embodiment in harmony with music. In the past Tyrone has performed and collaborated with artists such as J.Bouey, Christal Brown, Chafin Seymour, EPIC Motion, FunkanometryNY, Synead, and Karla Garcia. Tyrone is currently a dancer for The Fabulous Waack Dancers and Joya Powell’s Movement of the People.

    Class Description:

Waacking is a dynamic dance style created in the LGBT clubs of Los Angeles during the 1970’s disco era. This dance is characterized by rhythmic arm movements, posing, and emotional character play. This class is a generative, and joyful growing experience. Dancers will learn how to utilize their bodies through the lens of Waacking and Disco. Dancers will be given the tools to improve musicality and physical awareness through guided exercises. Movers are invited to investigate space, risk, and play with one’s physical vernacular in order to access personal freedom.
