Choreography of the Routine
About the Performance Project: Choreography of the Routine
Choreography of the Routine gives emerging dancers the opportunity to experience street and club dance in a theater setting. Participants will explore how freestyle—drawing from street and club dance styles they have learned—can generate material for a routine. Historically, routines created a shared structure that highlighted dancers’ solos while moving seamlessly into and out of freestyle. In this intensive, participants will learn how freestyle informs the routine and how the routine can develop into choreography without losing its connection to the dance forms from which it came.
Participants will:
-
Understand the relationship between freestyle, routines, and choreography
-
Practice freestyling with street and club dance styles they have studied
-
Learn how to select, organize, and refine material discovered through freestyle
-
Create routines that frame and highlight individual solos
-
Move seamlessly between freestyle and set material
-
Develop musicality, timing, spatial awareness, and stage presence
-
Experience performing street and club dance in a theater setting
-
Learn how to maintain the identity and integrity of a dance style onstage
