Shelby Kaufman began her dance training at the age of five at Annette and Company School of Dance in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Now living in New York City, she is a member of Germaine Salsberg’s tap company Les Femmes, Traci Mann’s Young Hoofers, Katrina Phillip’s musical theatre dance company SLC, and her own company of professional Jewish hoofers, Mazel Toes, for which she is also the choreographer. Shelby’s Mazel Toes choreography was featured in the 2009 Tap City Main Event. She danced a tribute to Tony Award nominated choreographer Randy Skinner, and performed new choreographic works by Brenda Bufalino, Michelle Dorrance, Jason Samuels Smith, Derick Grant, and Chloe Arnold, in other shows recently produced by the American Tap Dance Foundation. Shelby has become Ms. Arnold’s dance captain for various projects in New York, and also assists tap legend Dr. Harold ‘Stumpy’ Cromer both in choreography and in master classes. She additionally assisted Joshua Bergasse for his musical theatre choreography showcase at City Center. Shelby will soon be seen as a guest tap dancer on Sesame Street. Notable performance venues include the Apollo Theatre, Lincoln Center, and Symphony Space, and The Duke Ellington Theatre in Washington DC. She has taught tap, jazz, lyrical, musical theatre, and hip hop at studios in Michigan, Connecticut, New Jersey, Australia, and New York.
