Matthew Powell
Ballet
Biography:
Matthew Powell received his training at the School of American Ballet , and danced professionally with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, San Francisco Opera, the International tour of 'West Side Story,' and more. As a choreographer, Matthew was awarded a fellowship from the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of New York City Ballet, and recently received an award for his choreography at Regional Dance America. He has created works for Kansas City Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet School, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Broadway Dance Center, Brooklyn Ballet, and is the on-set choreographer for BLOCH dancewear. Guest Ballet Master credits include Royal New Zealand Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Slovak National Ballet, and ‘Flesh and Bone,’ a new limited series airing on the STARZ Network. As a teacher, Matthew’s current and past credits include Juilliard, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Rock School for Dance Education, Ballet Hispanico, Point Park University, Ballet Tech, Kansas City Ballet School, Trey McIntyre Project, Matthew Bourne, Karole Armitage, 'Billy Elliot' on Broadway, Universities of Iowa and Alabama, and more. Additionally, Matthew has worked extensively as Assistant Director for opera productions across the country.
Matthew is the proud producer and teacher of ‘Find Your Fifth,’ a new instructional video and album for ballet class, which aims to present the experience of a fun and nurturing ballet class in New York City in cinematic scope.
Upcoming projects for Matthew include a choreographic commission for Point Park University, directing a photo shoot for BLOCH Dancewear, and guest teaching at Ballet Academy East.
