Trisha Brown Trisha Brown Dance Company Technique and Repertory
Aug 2, 2010 - Aug 6, 2010;
Mon - Fri
Technique: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM Repertory: 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Class Description
Technique class will explore fundamentals that are
integral to understanding the range and detail of the
Trisha Brown Dance Company movement style. Emphasis
is placed on learning movement as the Company does:
with attention to detail, spatial clarity, performance
quality, and an awareness of dancing with others. Classes
begin with a warm-up emphasizing the coordination of
alignment, breath, and weight to bring space, direction,
and flow of energy through the joints. Concepts
emphasized in technique will be applied to Company
repertory.
The Trisha Brown Dance Company has presented the work
of its legendary artistic director for more than 35 years.
Founded in 1970 when Trisha Brown branched out from
the experimental Judson Dance Theater to work with her
own group of dancers, TBDC offered its first performances
at alternative sites in Manhattan’s SoHo. Today, the
Company is regularly seen in the landmark opera houses
of New York, Paris, London, and many other theaters
around the world. The repertory has grown from solos and
small group pieces to include major evening-length works
and collaborations between Ms. Brown and major visual
artists.
The workshop will be taught by Mariah
Maloney.
Mariah Maloney, originally from Homer, Alaska, is a New
York-based teacher, performer and choreographer
working throughout the United States, Canada, Europe
and Asia. From 1995-2002 she performed as a featured
soloist and ensemble dancer with Trisha Brown Dance
Company creating original roles in Trisha Brown’s Music
Cycle as well performing the legendary works: Set and
Reset, Newark, Astral Converted and For MG: The Movie,
among others.
For Mariah the greatest pedagogical reward comes when
she observes a student’s transformation and recognizes
that her teaching methods and presence have helped
facilitate the student’s growth and development. She
focuses on breath and body awareness in order to help
students develop proper alignment, a full range of motion,
greater coordination, and stability. Today she continues
her relationship with the company serving as an
international guest artist and a director in re-staging
repertory. In December 2008 The Columbia College
Chicago Dance Center premiered Mariah’s re-staging of
Set and Reset/Reset. Mariah’s choreography is presented
in New York at venues such as Judson Church, The
Kitchen, St. Marks Church, BRIC Theater and The Brooklyn
Museum of Art. Maloney earned a BFA from Purchase
College and a MFA from Hollins/ADF. Mariah currently
serves as an assistant professor at The College at
Brockport SUNY.
