Ballet Masters come to Peridance during May for a series of advanced classes on technique, and share insights into the artistry of ballet that made them successful.

Students can participate in Master Classes:
Every Saturday in May, 3pm - 4:30pm
plus one Wednesday, May 6th, 11:30am - 1pm

Detailed Instructor background information

Gelsey Kirkland, Saturday 5/2 (3-4:30)
An American ballet dancer, and one of the best classicists of her generation. Kirkland joined the New York City Ballet in 1968 at age fifteen after being invited by George Balanchine and was promoted to Soloist in 1969 and principal in 1972. She joined the American Ballet Theatre after meeting Mikhail Baryshnikov, who would become her perennial partner. Baryshnikov called her "The best ballerina of her generation".

Arturo Fernandez, Wednesday 5/6 (11:30-1)
Since 1992 Arturo has been the Ballet Master of Alonzo King's LINES Ballet. His career in dance includes work as a professional dancer, choreographer and master teacher. He has been an integral part of the San Francisco dance scene for over 25 years. As a master teacher Arturo has traveled extensively teaching master classes, workshops and intensives around the country. He has been a guest teacher for Lyon Opera Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Company, Inland Pacific Ballet, Robert Moses’Kin, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Moving People Dance Theater as well as many other companies.

Alexandra Wells, Saturday 5/9 (3-4:30)
principal dancer of the Ballet National de Nancy, touring the world and forming lasting partnerships with the late Rudolf Nureyev for six years and Patrick Dupont for four. During her 13-year tenure, she danced lead roles in the classics as well as the ballets of Balanchine, Fokine, Nijinsky, Lifar, Culberg, Bejart, DeMIlle, Neumier, Kylian, Van Manen, Limon, Christy and Dove. Currently Ms. Wells is a full-time faculty member at The Juilliard School in New York City.

Susan Jaffe, Saturday 5/16 (3-4:30)
Recognized as one of the leading ballerinas of her time, Ms. Jaffe has performed in many Opera houses throughout Europe and the United States. In 1980, at the invitation of Mikhail Baryshnikov, she joined American Ballet Theatre and became well known in the dance world at an extremely young age.Ms. Jaffe has also worked with and performed the repertoire of many of the 20th century’s most prominent choreographers, including George Balanchine, Anthony Tudor, Kenneth MacMillan, Jerome Robbins, Roland Petit, Twyla Tharp, Nacho Duato, Jiri Kilyan and James Kudelka.

Jose Manuel Carreño, Saturday 5/23 (3-4:30)
Jose Manuel started dancing at the age of ten and received his training at the Provincial School of Ballet and the Cuban National Ballet School. He won the Gold Medal at the New York International Ballet Competition in 1987 and the Grand Prix at the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi in 1990. He has appeared extensively in Europe, Latin America and the United States. He has been principal dancer in the English National Ballet in 1990, the Royal Ballet in 1993 and the American Ballet Theater starting in 1995.

Martine Van Hamel, Saturday 5/30 (3-4:30)
Martine van Hamel was born in 1945 in Brussels. She is Dutch and studied in Denmark, Netherlands, Venezuela and Toronto. Joined the National Ballet of Canada in 1963 and the American Ballet Theatre in 1970. Martine Van Hamel's technique, musicality and majestic presence was perfect for the classical repertory.
