Kids Teaching Kids
Kids Teaching Kids is a unique program in which a group of talented, dedicated teenage dancers from the Peridance Youth Ensemble work closely with young children from various communities to create their own choreography. This choreography is then showcased in a culminating final performance, which aims not necessarily to highlight the choreography itself, but rather the process and the participants' self-empowerment and achievements.
The program consists of 8-10 weekly 2-hour workshops, led by the Youth Ensemble dancers and supervised by Peridance's Outreach Director, Shelley Grantham. Kids Teaching Kids offers a creative outlet for each individual child within a group setting. The Youth Ensemble dancers, ages 13-18, are carefully mentored by Ms. Grantham and learn how to lead a workshop themselves, inspiring them to become role models and bringing the program to its fullest potential.
Working with these role models week by week, participants develop important qualities of collaboration, confidence, expressiveness, and focus. The Ensemble dancers and the younger participants learn from each other, often developing lasting friendships and close connections.
Curriculum:
- Creative and fun warm-up: working with the entire group to warm up the body and learn basic dance vocabulary.
- Composition: working in small groups to create their own composition pieces which will be shown in the final performance.
Program Benefits:
- Two-hour weekly workshops for 8-10 weeks
- Best suitable for grades K-8
- Curriculum is flexible and can be formatted to individual school's needs
- Includes a final performance of student choreography
Peridance Youth Ensemble has been partnering with University Settlement's Beacon Program at the East Side Community School since 2011.
