Bio:Amy Pivar, a Bessie Award-winning dancer/choreographer, has been practicing yoga for over a decade. A lifelong modern dance artist Pivar’s passion has been her exploration of the moving body, to cultivate the highest possible artistic expression, whether through dancing for choreographers such as Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Co and the Urban Bush Women, or with her own company Amy Pivar Dances. This passion now takes the form of teaching Anusara yoga, whose elegant Universal Principals of Alignment™ are state of the art in creating optimal alignment of the body, mind and spirit.
A certified teacher with the Yoga Alliance, RYT®, she is an Anusara-Inspired® yoga teacher who delights in passing on her decades of experience to empower others to step into the flow of their ideal alignment. She has completed both the Anusara Yoga immersion with Jackie Prete and Rudrani Faberman-Brown, and the 200 hour Anusara teacher training with Ellen Saltonstall, Lois Nesbitt, and Julie Dohrman. She continues her studies toward full certification with Anusara founder and master teacher, John Friend.
As a dancer, Pivar has worked with a number of distinguished dance companies including Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, the Urban Bush Women, and the Loremil Machado Afro-Brazilian Dance Company. As artistic director of Amy Pivar Dances, she choreographed numerous full-length socio- political dance theater works, and subsequently Songs for Solo Dance and Voice with collaborators mezzo-soprano Elaine Valby, composer Paula M. Kimper and director Freda Rosen. Pivar worked many years as a Life Coach and is also a Professional Goldsmith with a line of yoga inspired Jewelry. She teaches yoga as a perfect means to offer back all that has been given to her.
Class description:
The fastest growing style of yoga worldwide, Anusara yoga
“weaves clear, precise principles of alignment with energetic
movement while honoring the deep connection of body, mind
and spirit.” These principals are an elegant system to teach
students to open up to their optimal alignment toward
whatever their goals are in life. The Anusara alignment
principals are so refined in their simplicity that anyone can
learn, yet so sophisticated to contain every imaginable
detailed nuance of the advanced practitioner.
Pivar delights in teaching this heart-opening practice, where
you will learn to expand your energy beyond the limitations of
the body while gaining inner strength and resiliency, towards
unbounded creative freedom. All people are welcome.
“I feel these principals are the most advanced in an evolutionary process of alignment that I have been involved in throughout my dance career. Deep investigations in dance fed into yoga and now yoga feeds it back into dance. It is my dharma to teach this to others as a vehicle to give back all that life has given me. Yoga opens gateways into the highest alignment of our body, mind and spirit toward optimal integration. As a teacher speaking through the poses, systematically giving the cues to craft the optimal asana for each student, I feel confident that I am helping people to not only have a healthy practice, but to also entrain with each other to access an authentic experience of their essential selves, and be able to connect deeply to one’s inner vibration to express their life’s artistry.”
