    Bennyroyce Royon

Filipino-American dancer and choreographer Bennyroyce Royon is a graduate of The Juilliard School and former dancer with the Armitage Gone! Dance company. Royon has been noted for his "keenly focused, succinct way with movement" and his ability to blend explosive physicality with fluid energy. He has worked with notable choreographers such as Karole Armitage, Aszure Barton, Sidra Bell, and Jill Johnson, and has performed with numerous acclaimed dance companies including the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, Alaska Dance Theatre, and Sidra Bell Dance NY. Royon has appeared in PBS Great Performances, on Good Morning America, and in the music videos of Son Lux and My Brightest Diamond.

He founded Bennyroyce Dance Productions, a project-based, collaborative, multimedia, contemporary dance company based in New York City. Royon has received choreographic commissions from Atlanta Ballet, The Joffrey Academy of Dance, and The Juilliard School, and has been awarded multiple dance residencies. His work Take 4 was featured in the documentary dance film NEVER STAND STILL (2012). Royon is an active, sought-after teacher, bringing his own unique fusion of ballet, modern and contemporary dance to classes and workshops in Montréal, New York City, Seattle, and Stavanger, Norway.

    Class Description

Royon's well-rounded training at Juilliard combined with his broad experience as a freelance artist has cultivated his dancing with an impassioned sense of tactility and physicality. He applies his experiences to his teaching, and designs classes to flow through the spectrum of ballet, modern, and contemporary movement techniques infused with creative improvisation.

The class begins with a floor warm-up consisting of tasks that focus on breath, core strength, and total body awareness. This is followed by movement phrases that explore the quality and direction of movement in space. The latter part of the class encourages imagination in thought and movement via creative improvisation. By connecting all of these important elements, the dancer becomes a true artist and achieves a heightened level of movement experience that is sure to resonate through one's work and daily life.
