    Janelle Cambridge

Janelle was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. From an early age she knew she wanted to be a dancer and she has never wanted to do anything else but dance and share her talents with others. She started out dancing at a private dance competition studio doing ballet, tap, jazz, and lyrical. At the age of 15 years old she began to teach and by the time she turned 16 she decided she needed to expand her knowledge of dance by applying for scholarships at schools such as the Martha Graham Dance School, Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey, and Broadway Dance Center studying under Sheila Barker, Frank Hatchett, etc. Nellie realized she wanted to move from the concert dance world in the commercial world of dance and that is when she met her future mentor, friend, and sister of dance Rhapsody James. After her second class with Rhapsody, Ms. James pulled Nellie to the side and asked if she would like the join her new company, Rhapsody the Company. She made the transition originally from a private competition dance studio to study ballet, modern, and jazz at internationally known and respected dance institutions; and made the transition from that to HipHop and Street Jazz. She began training with Rhapsody in 2001 and after 10 years of being in her company, Rhapsody also cast Nellie as Venom in her first major work Siren Assassin “Dance to Die For”. Siren Assassin had been so successful in New York City for 3 years that they decided to move the show to LA where it had an equally successful run.

From then on in she has been in movies such as the American Gangster as the principle dancer, Step Up 2 The Streets, and Step Up 3D playing Fly. She then went off to dance for Ms. Bette Midler in the hit show in Las Vegas, “The Showgirl Must Go On” as a showgirl for two years. She has also worked in award shows such as MTV, AMA’s and the HipHop Honors. Nellie has had the honor of working with artists like Beyonce, Rihanna, New Kids on the Block, Kelis, Musiq, Soulchild, Ginuwine, Mary J. Blige, etc. She has had the privilege of working with choreographers such as the amazing Luther Brown, Kevin Maher, Fatima Robinson, Laurie Ann Gibson, Dave Scott, Hi Hat, Rich and Tone, and the amazing Ms. Toni Basil. She has taught both nationally and internationally most recently coming back from a two and a half month teaching engagement in Guam. Janelle was last seen dancing in a charity event performed by Rihanna and the 2013 Super Bowl as a backup dancer for Beyonce’s Halftime show. What’s next for Nellie is to continue to follow her dreams and give back to the next generation by making her next transition from dancer to choreographer.
